Giving God’s Grace

Matthew 5:38-41 (NLT)38 “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. 40 If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. 41 If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.”

How many of you grew up as kids with your parents telling you never to let someone push you around?  Stand up for yourself!  This scripture is not about being a weak person and allowing another person to treat you like a doormat.  There is a deeper meaning.

Jesus taught His disciples to look at others through the eyes of God.  These scriptures are about giving to others what they don’t deserve—going the extra mile.  God wants Christians to give to others mercy and grace just as He has given us mercy and grace.  Grace is about giving what others don’t deserve.  Remember, God gave us something precious that we didn’t deserve.

So, how do you give grace to others who don’t deserve it? How do you show kindness to someone who has just mistreated you, tried to embarrass you, and berated you in public?  They don’t deserve even an ounce of your time or kindness in return.  The answer is: you don’t have the desire or strength to give grace.  God does.  He gives you His compassion and strength to bestow grace on others.  There are many times I have prayed to God, saying, “Father, I don’t have the desire to forgive and show grace to this person, but I know this is the right thing to do.  I am asking you to place in my heart your love, compassion, and grace that is needed so that I can pass it along to the other person.  Father, give me the desire that is needed to show Agape love.  In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

Learn to walk in God’s grace and give God’s grace to others.  You will grow spiritually!

Be Blessed!
