Rejoicing When Your Enemy Falls

Proverbs 24:17, 18 (NLT) “Don’t rejoice when your enemies fall; don’t be happy when they stumble.
¹⁸ For the Lord will be displeased with you and will turn his anger away from them.”

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I really feel like this Christian walk is unfair.  When our enemies attack us, we are told to turn the other cheek.  Or if they are hungry and need water to drink, feed them.  If they need clothes or shelter, provide whatever they need. 

This is so God will work on their conscience.  Another scripture says that by being good toward your enemy, you are heaping coals of fire on their heads.  (Proverbs 25:21-23).  If you haven’t figured it out by now, doing good to others isn’t about you.  It is about showing others God’s character flowing through you to them. You are letting them see how much God loves them. 

Rejoicing when your enemies fall is a no-no.  As Christians, we should never deserve evil things to happen to our enemies.  King David had two opportunities to kill King Saul.  Remember, this is the King who was jealous of David because God was disappointed with King Saul and removed His anointing from him.  The prophet Samuel anointed David as the next King of Israel, but David did nothing to have King Saul removed.  David still honored and respected the existing King while he was still alive.  In return, King Saul spent 15 years chasing David and trying to kill him.  But David remained faithful to Him, even when he had the best opportunity to kill King Saul while he slept.  King Saul died in battle fighting the Philistines.  When King Saul realized they had lost the battle to the Philistines, he didn’t want to be tortured by the enemy.  So he asked his armor-bearer to kill him.  The armor-bearer refused.  So King Saul decided to kill himself by falling on his own sword. (1 Samuel 31:4,5)  Because David honored King Saul, God blessed him. 

God desires that no one should perish.  God wishes everyone to turn their lives around to become a follower of Him.  He knows how horrible hell is and wishes all to be saved.  When we see our enemy stumble, that is the opportunity to show compassion.  Don’t rejoice at their downfall.  Do they deserve it?  No.  Did we deserve Salvation? No.  But God gave it to us through our faith in Jesus Christ and acceptance of Him into our lives.
