Let the Holy Spirit Guide You
Galatians 5:16 (NLT) “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
As we live our lives on this earth, there will always be something that we desire and crave. Our bodies desire food for nourishment. But it craves other foods for satisfaction beyond being satiated. Did you know there is a slight difference between desire and craving? Craving is an intense and urgent need that only focuses on emotion and what the body wants. Desire is broader and more intentional, and is focused more on the experience, or a sustained experience. Desire can be managed and delayed. But cravings are urgent and must be satisfied immediately or at the earliest opportunity. Let’s be clear: Both desires and cravings, without the Holy Spirit, can lead to a selfish, sinful life.
God wants to grant the desires of your heart as long as you are obedient to Him. But if you are led by your cravings, it immediately blocks out the opportunity for the Holy Spirit to guide you towards righteousness. Being led by cravings is a more selfish way of looking at life. You are only interested in satisfying yourself.
Trying to satisfy yourself leads to an empty life because of two reasons: (1) whatever you are craving is temporary. It doesn’t last, and your cravings always return. You want more. (2) Your cravings are never satisfying. What you crave will never satisfy you. That is why so many people are depressed, burned out, and feel hopeless after chasing after self-indulgence.
Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NIV) “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.”
God is the only one who can satisfy you. When you decide to be led by the Holy Spirit, your cravings for self-indulgence diminish, and your desires change. You feel a desire to know Him more. Ask the Lord to make your spiritual ears more sensitive to hear the Holy Spirit. Then obey immediately when you do hear Him.
Be Blessed!
