Jesus Prayed
Luke 6:12 (NLT) “One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night.”
There are many scriptures in the New Testament where Jesus prayed. Jesus prayed often, in the mountains, and alone. He prayed so much that even his twelve disciples noticed and asked Him to teach them how to pray. But have you ever wondered why Jesus prayed? If He was the Son of God, why should He have to pray? In the book of Colossians 1:16, it describes how God, through Jesus, created all things. Other religions challenge Jesus’ deity in saying, “If Jesus was God, did He pray to Himself?” Here is something else to consider: Jesus prayed a lot by Himself. So, I ask again, why did Jesus pray?
I have heard many pastors say, “If Jesus needed to pray, then we definitely need to pray even more!” Here is something to remember: Jesus humbled himself to the limitations of humanity.
Philippians 2:6-8 (NLT) “Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form,8he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”
Jesus prayed because he made himself dependent on receiving direction from God the Father. Jesus depended on the Holy Spirit for any miracle He performed. Jesus connected to God the Father through prayer while He was living on this earth—the same access and availability we have today. Jesus used the same things we have right now. Jesus didn’t do miracles because He was God in the flesh. He did miracles because of His relationship to God the Father through prayer and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer is very serious. Spend time with the Lord by praying and sharing whatever is on your heart. Jesus did, and so should you!
