The Soul Is Never Satisfied
Ecclesiastes 6:7 (Amplified)“All the labor of man is for his mouth [for self-preservation and enjoyment], and yet the desire [of his soul] is not satisfied.”
As long as we live in our bodies, there will always be the desire to want more. Our bodies and minds will constantly desire more of what makes them feel, look, taste, smell, and sound good. Anything pleasurable to the soul or body is desirable, and our minds and bodies want more. 2 Timothy 3:2-4 warns that in the last days, people will be “lovers of self… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. We commonly call this behavior hedonism. This is the belief that pleasure is the highest and main goal of human life.
The devil and demons will always get you to focus on what you don’t have instead of being grateful for what you do have. In the Garden of Eden, God gave Adam and Eve everything and only one rule. But Satan convinced them that God was holding back on them and keeping them from everything by not allowing them to eat from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. Again, they could eat from any tree in the Garden. Adam named every animal that God brought to him. God routinely visited them in the Garden of Eden. But Satan focused on what they could not have.
Or how about when Jesus was in the wilderness for 40 days and nights? Jesus was fasting from food. What was the first thing Satan did? Challenged Jesus to make bread out of the stones. In other words, make food since he didn’t have any food. Satan also tried to give Jesus the kingdoms of the world. Another item that Jesus did not have (at the time).
Here is a challenge: Make a list of things you don’t have that you would like to have. Then make a list of things you already have and are grateful for. If your list of the things that you don’t have is more than double the list of things that you do have, then you need to learn to be more grateful.
We can never satisfy the human soul. The more you give in to what it wants, the more it will want in the near future. We should learn to be spiritually led rather than led by what our soul and body want. That is why Paul stated he learned to be content. (Philippians 4:11) God doesn’t mind you having things. But He does want you to be grateful for them. There are more things in life than trying to satisfy your soul and body.
Be Blessed!
