Quick-Tempered Fools
Proverbs 12:16 (NLT) “A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.”
Have you ever tried to have a calm conversation with someone, only to be the messenger, and then constantly interrupted by someone with emotional outbursts? You never get to the end of the sentence, and they are exploding with defensive remarks, and none of your comments were intended at them.
God is trying to help you see one characteristic of a foolish person. Have you ever watched a protester in the streets full of anger, but when you ask them to explain in detail why they are angry, they usually can’t? Or they later find out they were angry for the wrong reason. A person who cannot control their temper is walking down the path of foolishness. A foolish person will not take the extra step in finding out the truth. They accept anything at face value, form a preconceived judgment, and respond in anger. All of this happens within a second.
- Never make big decisions solely on rash emotions.
- Never make a big decision based on little information.
A wise person is calm. A wise person listens to the information, then takes the extra step of confirming whether it’s correct. Have you ever received an email from someone you know, were shocked by the content, and then forwarded the email to several other people? Then later you found out the information was false. I don’t know about you, but when that happens to me, I feel like I was part of a deceptive lie. I usually send a rebuttal email to apologize and correct my errors.
Wisdom has patience for the truth. Wisdom thrives on truth, knowledge, and the mechanics of knowing how and when to speak. Remember, fools talk for the sake of talking because they like to hear themselves talk, and they don’t care if they are right or wrong. Wise people speak only when it is necessary to speak.
