Power of the Tongue
Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Have you ever thought about whether God granted everything you said instantly? What would your day be like? I can promise you that some may have a glorious day, while others will be completely miserable.
The Bible is very clear that you should be careful with the words you speak. We will have to give an account for every idle (lazy, nonproductive, useless, barren) word that we speak. (Matthew 12:36). God is so serious about humans having free choice that He places our destiny in our hands. The word death means separation. But in this scripture, the word death refers to a place of the dead. God gives us the choice of our destination, or the road to it.
Think of a large ship in the water. A small rudder can steer a large ship. Your tongue, your thoughts, and what you say act like the rudder of your ship. If you want to change your direction, you first need to change the thoughts that you are thinking. Then you need to change the words you are speaking. I included your thoughts because they identify your purpose. Our goals should be to fulfill God’s plan! Set your mind, thoughts, and will on things above. (Colossians 3:2) Here is another scripture that parallels the above.
Deuteronomy 30:19 (NLT) “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!”
God is saying that He gives us the freedom to choose life or death. But He urges us to choose life. As if He is giving us the answer to the test. God always knows the right answer. And He always knows the best for us. He wants us to be happy and succeed, but above all, He wants us to have the right behavior like Jesus Christ.
Let no unkind word come out of your mouth. (Ephesians 4:29). Speak only words of life. Words that uplift and encourage others. Words that align with what is written in the Bible. Remember this: the devil couldn’t care less about what you say. But when you speak God’s Word, no force on this earth can stop it. God’s Word is active and alive. (Hebrews 4:12) And God’s Word never comes back void and empty.
Be Blessed!
