The Glory of God
Psalm 19:1 (NLT): “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship..’”
Scientists today say the observable universe, as seen through our most powerful telescopes, has a diameter of 93 billion light-years. That means if we had a space vehicle that could travel at the speed of light, it would take 93 billion years to travel from one edge of the universe to the other. The speed of light is about 186,000 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second). To give you an idea of how fast that is, if light were traveling through a fiber-optic medium, it would circle the entire Earth seven times in one second. Not that is very fast! Light traveling on Earth is very fast. But light traveling in space is considered very slow because of the distance. The true size of the universe is unknown.
Here is a question. Why is the universe so big? Why is the universe (also known as the heavens) so big that humans do not have a space vehicle fast enough to travel long distances to see other planets before dying? Well, we need to go back to the Bible for the answers. Consider this: We know God is invisible to the human eye.
1 Timothy 1:17: “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”
But God, who is invisible, wanted to give us a hint of who and what He is. How do you show something infinite and eternal to the human eye? By creating the Universe!
Romans 1:20 (NKJV): “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…”
Did you see that? To see God, you need to see His attributes, which are His Glory. The evidence is the Universe, the Earth, and all the creatures and living things on the Earth. Creation means there is a creator. For example, if you look at a building in the city, everyone knows a designer and builder created it. The building didn’t evolve over hundreds of years from the ground dust. Someone designed and built it. God created the universe so large so that we can see with our eyes that He is infinite. The universe is God’s portrait or fingerprint of who He is. The latter part of Romans 1:20 says, “…so that they are without excuse.” This means if you were to die and you are at judgment, you can’t say, “God doesn’t exist; I never saw Him.” God revealed Himself to you through His creation! The Bible clearly states that no one will have an excuse to deny God’s existence.
Hopefully you understand that the universe is not just a bunch of stars flickering in the night. We should all have reverence when we see the heavens, knowing God is infinite, and no problem is too big for Him to handle.
Be Blessed!
