Many Will Be Offended

Matthew 24:10 (NKJV) And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.

Jesus had just left the temple, and His disciples began talking to Him about the temple building and how beautiful it was.  Then Jesus told the disciples that this Holy Temple would be destroyed, and not a single stone would be left standing.  Just as Jesus predicted, the Romans conquered the Holy Temple in 70 AD.  Jesus also spoke of future events, and one concerned many people being offended.

You can’t turn on the television without hearing about someone being offended or a defamation-of-character lawsuit pending over what someone said.  There are folks getting offended over statues that represent a documented historical fact.  We document history to understand how we got to the present and to never forget what happened so that we are not doomed to repeat the same mistakes from the past.  But Jesus said all of this was going to happen before He returns to this Earth.

The word offense comes from the Greek word Scandalizo or Skandalon (Strong’s Concordance: G4624).  It is where we get the English word Scandal.  Scandalizo means to place a stumbling block, or an impediment in the way.  It also means to cause to fall away.  The Greek root word for Skandalon means baited trap.  Now think for a second.  If getting offended means causing you to stumble, impede your way, cause you to fall away, and is basically a baited trap, who is the one setting the trap and trying to get you to stumble and fall away from the truth?  Bingo!  The enemy Satan.  The Bible warns us about falling into the trap of being offended.

Proverbs 12:16 (NLT) “A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.”

Don’t fall into Satan’s trap by being quick-tempered and quick to take offense.  You are thinking about yourself when you get offended, and that is the path that leads away from God.  I know you’re thinking, “So I’m just supposed to sit there and say and do nothing?  And let them walk all over me?”  Remember, Jesus said not a single word while being questioned before the cross.  “Well, I ain’t Jesus!  I have to speak my mind!”  And that is your problem!  Proverbs 12:16 says that a wise person stays calm when insulted.  You need to stay calm and quiet so that you can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit.  He will tell you what to say, what not to say, or say nothing at all.

Silence is power under control!  And silence opens your heart to the Holy Spirit to speak wisdom to your spirit.

Be Blessed!
