Dreams

Acts 2:17 (NLT) “In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. “

Have you ever wondered why we dream?  I used to believe dreams were random thoughts that your brain pieces together as you live your life.  Most of the time, your dreams seem familiar because they are images of places and people you have already visited and seen.  They are stored in your memory, and your brain is randomly selecting memories to piece together your dream.  Then I started looking at what the Bible says about dreams.

Dream (Strong’s Concordance, G1798, Enypnion {Pronounced: en-oop-nee-on}): Something seen during sleep. Latin definition: a vision which presents itself to one in sleep.

God uses dreams to speak to us.  Dream is the same as a Vision because they both reference something seen.

Here are some examples of God visiting people in their dreams:

  • King Solomon
  • (1 Kings 3:5-15) God visited him in his dream.  Offered him Wisdom and Wealth.
  • (1 Kings 9:1-9) God visited Solomon at the completion of the build of the temple.
  • Jacob – (Genesis 28:10-22) Jacob saw a ladder of angels going up and down from heaven.
  • Joseph – (Matthew 1:20-25) God visited Joseph to tell him it was ok to marry Mary.
  • King Abimelech – (Genesis 20:3) King Abimelech took Sarah (Abraham’s wife) into his harem to marry her.  But God visited King Abimelech in a dream.
    • Scripture: But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are a dead man, for that woman you have taken is already married!”

Why does God speak to us in dreams?  We already know from the Bible that he can speak to us audibly while we are awake.  But why dreams?  Why wait until we are asleep?

  1. Because that is the point where we are the least distracted.  When you are awake, your mind randomly latches on to thoughts that are triggered by your surroundings, or other things.  Your mind is often clouded by worry, stress, anxiety, activities, what needs to get done, routines, things other people have said, and daily events.
  2. God wants you to remember what He tells you.  People will remember dreams longer than a random thought.  When you dream, you don’t see just words.  Dreams are images with words.  It is like a mini-movie without the rolling credits at the end.
  3. God uses dreams to reveal the future, provide warnings of impeding danger, or provide direction.
  4. God uses dreams to test you. He may tell you something in a dream, then wait to see if you are obedient to Him.

Keep in mind, not every dream is from God.  There are also occasions where the enemy places thoughts in your mind to mislead you.  Here is something to remember.  God will never contradict what is written in the Bible.  If you have a dream that is disturbing you or you are wondering its meaning, go to prayer and go to the Bible.  If you still don’t understand, continue to pray and ask God for His understanding.  There are many times when I didn’t understand something initially, but days later, an event happened, and it was directly related to a dream.  My point is, God has a reason and a timing for everything.  If He tells you something, pray about it.  It could be something He is planning and preparing for you.  If it is a nightmare or evil thoughts that the enemy placed in your mind, no weapon formed against you shall ever prosper.

Don’t ignore your dreams.  Pray about them.

Be Blessed!
