Claiming to Know God

Titus 1:16 (NLT) “Such people claim they know God, but they deny him by the way they live.”

Let’s face it.  There are a lot of people professing to be Christians.  If you ask them, “Are you a Christian?” their response will be, “Yes!  I go to church.” Or, “Yes, I know God.” I have said this many times, and it is definitely worth repeating: standing in your garage does not make you a car.  And going to church does not make you a Christian.  Jesus said very plainly to his disciples:

Matthew 7:16 “You will know them by their fruits.”

If you are truly a Christian, then you will produce the products from the Holy Spirit who is living inside of you.  One of them is having the desire to want to do what God asks you to do.  You have a desire to do what is right and are willing to let go of things from your past.  Next, you will have Love, Joy, Peace, and the other fruits described in Galatians 5:22, 23.

I want to be very clear.  There is no way you can be a Christian and continue doing sin as if it were ok.  Notice I didn’t say all Christians will never sin again in the future.  Falling into sin can be an accident.  But living in sin is a choice.   Everyone makes mistakes.  If you have remorse and convictions immediately after sinning, then that is proof that the Holy Spirit lives inside of you and is trying to pull you back to the Lord to make things right.  But if you are committing sins and there is no remorse, no convictions, and you don’t see anything wrong, then it has become your way of living.  You have entered into rebellion due to your own choice.  Your life and the way you are living your life are more important than obedience to the Lord.

This is not judgmental talk.  This is love and truth talk.  God loves you so very much that He wants you to be with Him forever.  But He loves you enough to allow you to have free will to choose to be without His presence.  If you choose the latter, then you will have to suffer the punishment of sin, which was already paid for by Jesus Christ.  Think about it.  Someone else has already paid the price of Sin for you, and God has already placed His judgment and punishment for sin.  You have the right to accept His plan or reject His plan and present your efforts of righteousness.  There is an old saying, “Whoever represents themselves in court has a fool for an attorney.”   My advice to you is this: let Jesus be your attorney.  He already won the case for you!  Now seek after God!

Be Blessed!
