Wisdom and Discipline

Proverbs 1:2 (NLT) “Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise.”

Has it ever occurred to you that reading the book of Proverbs has a purpose? In the first couple of verses in chapter one, a list explains the purpose of reading the Book of Proverbs.

  • To teach people Wisdom
  • To teach people Discipline
  • To help understand the insights of the wise.

What jumps out of the Scripture is that Wisdom can be taught.  Not only do you have the opportunity to receive God’s Wisdom just by asking (James 1:5), but Wisdom can also be learned.  The same Wisdom that God gave King Solomon is also accessible to you.  Wisdom tells you what to do with the knowledge that you have.

Another aspect of reading the Proverbs is that it teaches you Discipline.  A disciplined person is known for self-control under pressure.  They have orderly conduct and have a unique ability to stay focused. It is also a person who does not give up easily.

When you have Wisdom and Discipline both working inside of you, you are walking down the path of the Wise.  You will have insight and unique knowledge about things beyond your own understanding.

Human wisdom comes from experiencing your own failures and learning from them or learning from the failures of others.  God can give you His Wisdom, which gives you insight in knowing what to do.  You have the right to choose, and God gives you freedom to use your own wisdom.

Be Blessed!
