Telling Lies
Proverbs 6:16-19 (NLT) “There are six things the Lord hates— no, seven things he detests:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent,18 a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong,19 a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.”
Did you notice that this scripture reference lies twice? Let me say it differently: when it comes to God’s list of things that He hates, it is lying. He hates it so much that he referenced it twice as a reminder. Lying is speaking an untruth. It is calling something opposite to true reality.
One reason why God hates a lying tongue is that before Man was created, it was a lie that was told and spread around in Heaven by Lucifer that caused one-third of the Angels to rebel against God. That is why Jesus said Satan was the father of all lies.
John 8:44 (NLT) “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”
So why do people lie? There are many reasons why people lie. Some include self-interest, self-protection, avoiding embarrassment, and gaining an advantage over another person or situation. All are focused on selfish behavior. Did you know that when you decide to lie, you are influenced by the enemy not to tell the truth so that you protect yourself? God does not want you to behave like the enemy. Some folks tell so many lies that they come to believe their own made-up stories are true. Everyone knows that if you tell one lie, you have to continue telling a lie to cover up the first lie. Telling lies is a dangerous, sinful behavior. I’m not talking about telling one lie if your life and you are forever condemned. If you have repented, then God has forgiven you. I’m speaking about living your life with a lying tongue and choosing not to change; i.e., a lying behavior. If you don’t break the lying tongue behavior, God’s judgment will not be kind:
Revelation: 21:8 (NKJV) “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Ask God for help. The Holy Spirit will prompt you, saying, “You know that is not true!” Repent and speak what is true.
Be Blessed!
