Constructive Criticism
Proverbs 29:1 (NLT) “Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.”
Have you ever encountered a person who gets very defensive when you suggest ideas? You are not trying to tear down the ideas. You are offering recommendations. At a minimum, you only want the group to hear your recommendations from a different perspective, but the original person begins to get argumentative.
The entire 29th chapter of Proverbs talks about people with foolish behaviors, and the first indicator is retaliation when someone offers constructive criticism. But a wise person will always listen first to what is said, then thank you for the information given. Even if they decide not to use the information, they will still appreciate your contribution.
Proverbs 9:9 (NLT): “Give advice to a wise person, and he will become even wiser. Teach a righteous person, and he will learn more.”
So what do you do when a person refuses to listen to your helpful input? You do exactly what Jesus told His disciples to do.
Mark 6:11 (NLT): “But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.”
Don’t even waste your time arguing with them because they will never see another person’s point of view. In fact, they will get angry at you for disrupting them and feel threatened that you are trying to steal the credit for their idea. (Proverbs 23:9) Moving on is the best thing you could ever do.
Here is something that will help you move on. When a person starts yelling at you while trying to give helpful recommendations, don’t say a word. Just smile and walk away. Some people can’t handle not saying anything because they feel they must respond. No One is going to have the last word with them. Silence is a powerful weapon. A person who doesn’t engage in an argument and controls their anger can rule a city. (Proverbs 16:32) Only wise leaders know when something needs to be said and when to be silent.
Be Blessed!
